Ovulation

During natural conception, several eggs begin to grow in both ovaries at the time when a woman starts menstruation. Each egg grows in a fluid containing sac; it is the “follicle”. Only one egg will be mature and ovulated from an ovary monthly or every two (2) months.

A follicle basically looks like a small blister about 3 to 4 mm in size. It is nestled on the surface of the ovary; it contains follicular fluid and a cell about the size of a small needle tip; the cell is the “ovum”, “oocyte”, or “egg”.

Under the stimulation of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) that is secreted by pituitary gland, only one follicle can be mature for ovulation, the rest of follicles are immature and reabsorbed by the ovaries. The selected follicle grows and reaches about 20 mm in diameter (or about the size of a large grape), this process takes about two weeks before it can ovulate.During natural conception, several eggs begin to grow in both ovaries at the time when a woman starts menstruation.
